To protect public health and enhance the quality of life of Orange County citizens by controlling disease-transmitting and pest mosquitoes

Spraying Announcement

Orange County Mosquito Control will spray the following areas by air on September 6-7, 2008:

Christmas, Ft Christmas, Wedgefield, Bithlo, Avalon Park

Spraying will take place between dusk and dawn weather permitting.

Adult Mosquito Surveillance:
Twenty-seven permanently positioned light traps collect mosquitoes seven days a week. These collections are examined three times a week to determine the types and numbers of mosquitoes collected. Additionally, twenty-two temporary light traps may be placed within the county to collect mosquitoes. These collections are also examined on a weekly basis. All decisions to control mosquitoes are based on these surveillance results.

Adult Mosquito Control:
Truck-mounted sprayers can spray ten separate areas simultaneously. Spraying usually begins shortly after sunset and can continue into the very early morning hours depending on the time of the year. Spraying cannot be conducted if winds exceed ten miles per hour or if it is raining. When dictated by conditions, aerial spraying may also be utilized. The same spray time and weather restrictions apply.

Immature Mosquito Control:
All mosquitoes undergo part of their life cycle in the water. Therefore, controlling them in the water is an integral part of the program. Mosquito control personnel inspect known and potential mosquito breeding sites throughout the county on a daily basis. When immature mosquitoes are found, they are treated accordingly. Mosquito control personnel assigned this function also investigate complaint calls associated with mosquitoes.

Mosquito Transmitted Disease Surveillance:
In conjunction with the State Health Department, testing is conducted on a weekly basis throughout the year to determine the presence and activity of certain mosquito transmitted diseases such as West Nile, St. Louis, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

Public Education:
Presentations are given to provide information on area mosquito control, mosquito control around the home, personal protective measures, and mosquito-transmitted diseases. Written information is provided at each presentation.
